THE Zimbabwe Olympics Committee have welcomed the inclusion of Sevens Rugby as an addition to the Olympic sporting family. ZOC vice-president Busi Chindove told The Herald at a dinner organised by newly-crowned Lion Lager National Rugby League champions Old Hararians Sports Club recently that they were happy Sevens Rugby was now an Olympic Sport.

“ZOC, and indeed the Olympic Committee at large, have welcomed the inclusion of Rugby 7s as an Olympic Sport. We hope to take a team to participate at the second Africa Youth Games in Botswana next year, if confirmed by the Confederation of African Rugby.

“What a great opportunity for our youngsters. Unfortunately, as per the regulated quota for the Youth Olympic Games, we will not be at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing in 2014.

“Having been the chef de mission to the first YOG (Youth Olympic Games) in Singapore in 2012 let me confirm the immense value and experience this platform provides for our athletes,” said Chindove.

ZOC remained committed to the development of sport and Chindove said they valued their good relationship with its affiliates.
