THE Zimbabwe team for the Zone VI Gymnastics showcase set for December in Harare have intensified their preparations with expectations high that Tichaona Gwenzi will make a big impression. The event will this year be held at Belvedere Technical Teachers College and is scheduled to run from December 9 to 13.
Countries to feature in the competition include Angola, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and hosts Zimbabwe.
Coach Chris Muchatuta says he expects his athletes to make a big splash.
“Zimbabwe has had a strong track record at previous Zone VI competitions. In 2010, the men’s tumbling team won their event.
“In 2011, Kudzi Nyazvigo won the overall Senior Men’s title and eight gold medals, while the Junior Aerobics team won a gold medal and last year Gwenzi won the senior tumbling competition.
“In tumbling, competitors perform eight skill sequences along a track, usually starting with forward twisting somersaults (such as round-off Barani, or Rudi) followed by a series of back-handsprings and or whips (a fast, long back somersault done in a straight body position) and we are happy to say the Gwenzi has done all that.
“Gwenzi has the potential and we expect him to do well, he has got the skill and his double backs are perfect and so we are confident that he is going to retain his title,” said Muchatuta.
The Zone VI competition will also feature rhythmic gymnastics.
