THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services has introduced a new uniform for female inmates featuring a slack that is expected to improve welfare through enhanced comfort and warmth.
ZPCS Commissioner-General Dr Moses Chihobvu said the new uniform seeks to provide better comfort and protection against harsh weather conditions.
The new uniforms were unveiled at a recent event held at Mutare Remand Prison where Officer Commanding Manicaland Province, Commissioner Spetosomusa Chinobva, highlighted the importance of this change and emphasising that Comm-Gen Chihobvu’s vision was to ensure that female inmates have suitable attire to endure the cold winters, a proposal quickly embraced by the Manicaland Province.
“After designing and creating a sample of the slacks, we presented it to the management during the 153rd Pass-out Parade, where it received approval,” said Commissioner Chinobva.
She said the tailors’ section was then tasked with producing the slacks, with Simukai/Phakamani Manicaland Chapter, an entrepreneurship arm of ZPCS, contributing elastic materials for the uniforms.
“The response from the inmates was overwhelmingly positive. Their applause and ululations filled the air, expressing their gratitude for the thoughtful upgrade. The new uniforms align the ZPCS with international standards, where female inmates in countries like Mozambique already benefit from similar attire.
“This unveiling marks a progressive step towards enhancing the dignity and comfort of female inmates, showcasing a commendable effort by ZPCS to address the needs of those under their care,” said ZPCS.
Initially, female inmates in remand wore green dresses, while those who were convicted wore yellow dresses which were later changed to pink. The new uniform features a pink blouse and slack.
