ZPS needs help

In a speech read on his behalf by Harare North district administrator, Mr John Makoni, at the horticulture field day at Harare Central Prison recently, Mr Tome said it was the thrust of the ZPS to contribute towards the economy and to rehabilitate offenders by empowering them with skills for self reliance when they are released from prison.

“I call upon the business community, non governmental organisations, churches, individuals and churches to assist Harare Central Prison in its gardening project and empower the offenders with skills,” said Mr Tome.

“Inmates who benefit from this garden are from the community and need to have a second chance in life. I feel proud to realise that this prison has taken seriously the concept of economic development and self reliance through productive land use.”

The field day was hosted by ZPS in partnership with Nico-Orgo fertilizers.
Mr Tome commended Nico-Orgo for assisting ZPS with fertilizers and technical expertise.

Harare Central Prison has an arable land of eight hectares which is not being fully utilised because of water shortages, poor irrigation equipment and non viability of hydrants.

Mr Tome said through the intervention of other organisations, ZPS could boost production.
Nico-Orgo director, Mr John Chimedza, urged farmers to undertake correct agricultural activities timely.

“Farming is all about timing. You can lose yields if operations are done late,” he said.
ZPS assistant commissioner Phineas Chitekuteku said the fertilizer from Nico-Orgo would go a long way in boosting Harare Central Prison’s agricultural production.
