to increase yields on prison farms.
Speaking to journalists in Harare, Zimbabwe Prison Services Deputy Commissioner Fadzai Mupure said that they have engaged Foundations For Farming which is helping them in training of prison officers in farming management.
“Through the initiative we had with Foundations for Farming there has been improvement in yields from our farms because of the training our prison officers are getting. This has enabled us to adequately supply part of the prisoners’ diet,” she said.
Mr Theuns Botha, one of the trustees of the NGO, said they are working with up to 25 prison farms, imparting skills and farming methods that will help increase yields.
“Our office is involved in the training of prison officers in farm management, which involves many fields like accounting, and this enhances productivity,” he said.
Mr Botha said they are implementing what he called “farming God’s way” (conservation farming) since resources are limited.
The NGO holds annual awards for the best farm managers and farms.
Last year’s best farm award went to Khami Prison in Bulawayo. Over the years, prisons have been experiencing food shortages.
