THE Zimbabwe Republic Police yesterday launched the Bulawayo West District Police Patrol Unit in a bid to increase visibility and curb criminal activities.

Speaking during the event held at Iminyela suburb, the Officer Commanding Bulawayo West District, Chief Superintendent Marshall Dube encouraged the police on patrol to be vigilant and remain committed towards executing their duties.

“The role played by the presence of uniformed police officers on patrol in law enforcement is often underestimated by most communities. Police should not be shy of their work and should carry out their duties effectively. There are young police officers who despise beat patrols. When they are assigned patrol duties they grumble and loiter, such tendencies contradict sections of the police act,” he said.

Chief Supt Dube said members of the public also have a role to play in assisting the police in effectively carrying out their duties.

Chief Supt Dube said the police like any other entity was there to carry out its duties to the nation and protect the people.

“The Police Patrol Unit should do the nation proud and make this country a safe haven. Policing is a smart profession to protect fellow humanity, prevent and reduce crime in the area,” said Chief Supt Dube.

Mpopoma-Pelandaba representative in the National Assembly Cde Joseph Tshuma also encouraged women to speak out about sexual abuse and report such cases to the police.

“Police should be regarded as our friends; they are no longer law enforcers but service providers, therefore it is our duty as the public to assist them and people should be free to speak to the police and not conceal any criminal activity or criminals,” said Cde Tshuma.
