THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has put its foot down, banning night travel for learners as the back-to-school frenzy grips the country.
Schools reopen for the Third Term on Tuesday, and on Monday morning, Bulawayo was abuzz as hundreds of boarders packed buses at City Hall and OK Mart, heading to schools in Matabeleland South and North.
With the annual back-to-school rush in full swing, some boarding schools had to hire buses from local day schools to cope with the demand.
Police have warned parents, guardians, and school authorities to put safety first, urging transporters to use only certified roadworthy vehicles.
“Drivers must avoid speeding and strictly comply with road rules to prevent accidents,” said the ZRP in a statement.
The cops stressed that night travel for learners is strictly off-limits, saying it exposes children to danger, from road accidents to criminal attacks.
“School authorities and transporters must ensure buses are not overloaded and that travel takes place during daylight hours only,” read the statement.
In a further safety push, schools have been advised to deposit tuition and fees directly with financial institutions instead of keeping large amounts of cash on site — a move aimed at reducing the risk of robbery and theft.
With police vowing to clamp down on reckless operators and unroadworthy vehicles, parents are being urged to play their part in safeguarding children during this busy travel period.
