Police are investigating a video circulating on social media showing a family inspecting their cattle killed and skinned in a bushy area by suspected rustlers.
The video shows at least three cattle carcasses with some meat spread on sacks and plastics while a police officer is at the scene.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they were still trying to ascertain the area in where the incident occurred. He said he would only be able to provide the details of the case once investigations were completed. Cases of stock theft have been on the increase countrywide with criminals targeting farmers. Most of the stolen cattle are killed in bushy areas before the meat is ferried to markets in urban areas where there are ready markets.
Last month, police in Zvimba arrested Criswell Maponga (42) in connection with two cases of stock theft in which eight cattle were stolen from Farm 79 Zowa and eight others at Mhungu Village. The arrest led to the recovery of 15 stolen cattle. In October, police in Macheke, Mashonaland East Province, arrested four suspects, including a 15-year-old boy on allegations of stealing 29 cattle from Moria B Farm in Headlands. The four were caught in Macheke while trying to sell the cattle to butchers.
The juvenile was employed as a herd boy at Moria B Farm and he connived with three other suspects to steal from his employer. At first, they stole 13 cattle before returning on another day to steal 16 more cattle. Upon arrest, police recovered 24 cattle and five are still missing.
