THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Thursday will roll out a national anti-crime campaign in Bulawayo aimed at strengthening the fight against drug and substance abuse, stock theft, sexual offences and other criminal activities through enhanced community participation.
The campaign, to be held at the Large City Hall, is expected to bring together members of the public, community leaders, business representatives, youths and other stakeholders as police intensify efforts to promote safer communities.
Held under the theme “A Safer Nation Starts With Us,” the campaign seeks to reinforce the message that crime prevention is a shared responsibility requiring the active participation of every citizen.
The initiative comes as the police continue to encourage members of the public to work closely with law enforcement agencies by reporting criminal activities and suspicious behaviour in their communities.
The campaign will focus on raising awareness about the dangers of drug and substance abuse, which has emerged as one of the country’s most pressing social challenges, particularly among young people.
Police will also engage communities on measures to curb stock theft, a crime that continues to threaten the livelihoods of many rural households, while educating the public on the prevention and reporting of sexual offences and other crimes.
The event is expected to emphasise the importance of timely reporting of crime, with the police urging members of the public to embrace the “See Something, Say Something” approach as part of efforts to build a crime-free society.
According to the event programme, the campaign will run under the rallying call: “Working Together for a Crime-Free Society – Together We Can, Together We Will.”
The ZRP says community policing remains one of the most effective tools in combating crime, as it fosters trust and cooperation between law enforcement officers and the public.
Members of the public have been encouraged to attend the campaign and interact with police officers on issues affecting the safety and security of their communities.
The campaign forms part of the ZRP’s nationwide drive to enhance public awareness, strengthen partnerships with communities and promote collective responsibility in preventing crime across the country.
