‘ZRP should remain vigilant on Renamo activities’

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Support Unit should remain vigilant in light of the banditry activities being carried out by Renamo in neighbouring Mozambique, a senior police official has said.
Deputy Commissioner-General (Operations) Innocent Matibiri applauded the police for maintaining peace and tranquility throught out the year and urged them to be extra-vigilant in the eastern border city of Mutare in light of Renamo’s activities.

Renamo proescuted a civl war from 1975 to 1992 that resulted in the deaths of some one million people and sucked in Zimbabwe, which deployed militarily in Mozambique after 1980.

Dep Comm-Gen Matibiri, officiating at an end of year party at Support Unit Headquarters in Harare last week, said: “Reports of tension caused by Renamo along some of our borders calls for your high level of alertness as we strive to re-assure members of our communities living along some of our borders.”

He added, “Indeed the year 2013 was a year of splendid performances as we proved to the whole world that we are a police force of principles and integrity.

“Of note has been your ability to successfully maintain the internal security of the nation throughout the year that saw Zimbabwe coming out with a home grown constitution as well as successfully hosting the United Nations World Tourism Organisation Conference amongst other national events.

Dep Comm-Gen Matibiri called on the Support Unit to ensure peace and tranquillity prevails throughout the festive season.
“Let’s facilitate the merry-making of our people by protecting and preserving their lives and property,” he said.
He also implored the nation to celebrate the birth and life of Jesus in a calm and orderly way.

“Let us be merry but in so doing respect the sanctity of our lives and that of others. Let`s avoid drinking and driving,” he said.
