THE Zimbabwe Republic Police team yesterday started the Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation Games on a better note by scooping four gold medals, four bronze and four silver here. The gold medals were scooped in Javelin men, Javelin women, 10 000 metres athletics (women) and medley rely (men).
Bronze medals were scooped in 100m hurdles (women), long jump (men), Javelin (men) and 10000 metres (men).
In 200m (men), 800m (men), medley (women) and 800m (women) the Zimbabwe team scooped silver medals.
Athletics such as Olivia Chitate, the medley comprising of Luckson Mhara, Connias Mudzingwa, Nkosilathi Ndlovu and Kenneth Chibwana, Isiah Mupfaya and Raviro Mubhau, among others proved that they are a force to reckon during the games.
They participated and scooped the four gold medals and proved that they can work as a team.
Other athletes also tried their best.
The team has been training hard to ensure that they defend their title.
The host country, Namibia is topping the list with six gold medals so far.
Namibia is presenting to be a threat and tough contender.
ZRP is battling it out with their counterparts from Sadc countries at the eighth edition of the Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation Games.
The team has been training at the University of Namibia grounds, Independence Stadium and Namibia Agricultural College.
Team Zimbabwe is hoping to make it a three success stories on the trot after emerging as the best in Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2009 and 2011.
Commissioner — General of Police Augustine Chihuri recently urged the team to be disciplined and work hard as they seek to defend their title in Windhoek,
Namibia. The Games will be held until August 30 with 13 countries taking part and Zimbabwe send a contingent of 195 athletes and officials of which 81 are females.
They are seven sporting events — athletics, darts, chess, football (men and women), netball, volleyball (men and women) and tennis.
Mbada Diamonds which sponsored the team with tracksuits, t-shirts, caps, satchels and recently promised to give US$200 to each member of the team that wins a gold medal while Cottco weighed in with US$16 500, CBZ US$10 000 and other companies that came in to support are Doves, Sakunda, Lunar Chickens, Moonlight, Sam Levy, Elkhart Mine, Zinara, ZTA, AVM Africa, Rockshade, Badger Commandant, Tynserv Distributors, Paron Vista and Ranishaw.
