ZRP to clampdown on negligent drivers

Police will soon be cracking down on motorists by impounding their vehicles and checking the validity of their drivers’ licences following an increase in reckless and negligent driving around Harare.

Drivers continue to violate various traffic rules and regulations causing road traffic accidents.

Motorists are driving against one-way, driving through red lights, creating unnecessary lanes on the roads and disobeying police officers controlling traffic.

In an interview, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi laid out the concerns: “We have noted with concern the conduct of driving by some of the drivers who continue violating traffic rules and regulations when travelling on the roads.

“As police, we are beginning to query that some of them do not have drivers’ licences or genuine drivers licences. We will be forced to embark on a crackdown to impound motor vehicles to verify the drivers’ licences.”

Asst Comm Nyathi said most of the offending drivers were causing unnecessary congestion and not obeying officers controlling traffic.

Recently, 23 motorists were summoned to Avondale Police Station in Harare over allegations of driving through a red light at the intersection of Monavale Road and Solomon Mujuru Drive (Kirkman Road) in Belvedere.

The motorists were identified through video cameras installed at the intersection.

Police then said they will continue publicising all the motorists who violated traffic regulations.

Last year, police in Harare and the Central Vehicle Registry embarked on a smart policing strategy through the use of technology to arrest offending motorists in central Harare.

Under the operation, police started using cameras in the city targeting drivers of commuter omnibuses and pirate taxis who are notorious for breaking road rules and regulations.
