THE inaugural Zimbabwe Rugby Union Sevens Tournament is set to take place at Old Georgians Sports Club at the end of the month and nine teams have so far confirmed their participation.
ZRU general manager Grant Mitchell, who is working together with the National Rugby League, are set to hold a pre-season Sevens rugby tournament that will run for three weeks at OG’s. The tournament will also be used to prepare the Cheetahs for the Hong Kong IRB Sevens tournament that will take place towards the end of next month.
Mitchell indicated that 11 teams have so far expressed interest in taking part in the Spar-sponsored event and the ZRU was aiming at having 16 teams with the hope of also including the women’s sides.
Local rugby giants and former champions Harare Sports Club and bitter rivals Old Hararians Sports Club are yet to confirm their participation while Gweru are also expected to field a side.
“Airforce would like to field two teams for the tournament, Mutare, Southern City, the Bulawayo trio of Old Miltonians, Panthers and Busters have confirmed taking part.
“Mabvuku and Mbare are also interested but District Dragons might field two teams for the tournament depending on if they are able to raise the required numbers to make up two teams,” said Mitchell. The local tournament will run for three weeks starting on February 26 and through to March 12 with Spar taking care of most of the tournament needs.
