THE Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) has announced that Temba Mliswa has been suspended from the board after he is said to have breached Section 19.1 of the sport’s governing body’s constitution
Mliswa accused the rugby executive of funds mismanagement and has since filed a court case. However, according to ZRU, that violates its constitution.
In a statement ZRU said Mliswa, who serves as the chairperson of the Mashonaland West provincial rugby board, is facing a disciplinary hearing.
“Specifically, the Union wishes to clarify that Mr Mliswa’s conduct has been in direct violation of Section 19.1 of the ZRU Constitution. This section explicitly prohibits taking internal disputes to external courts outside of the structures outlined in the ZRU statutes, Rugby Africa, and World Rugby regulations.
“The ZRU’s established disciplinary processes are designed to address such matters fairly and efficiently within the rugby framework. As a result of this constitutional violation, the ZRU Board resolved unanimously, in accordance with due process, to suspend Mr Mliswa with immediate effect.
“His case has been referred to a disciplinary committee, where he will be given the opportunity to present his case in a fair and transparent manner, adhering to the established rules of the Union.
The Zimbabwe Rugby Union remains committed to fostering a thriving rugby ecosystem, built on respect, discipline, and unity,” read the statement.
Mliswa, through his X (formerly Twitter) accused the ZRU leadership of corruption. On Wednesday last week, Mliswa took the ZRU executive to court causing the arrest of Losson Mtongwiza and Sifiso Made on corruption related allegations.
As per reports, the investigating officer was directed by the National Prosecuting Authority to record more statements and bring the docket for hearing in 14 days.
“My only crime has been the continued insistence for bank statements and breakdowns relating to money they used. However I don’t tire of such issues; they have only made it worse as they can’t sustain me and I will reveal more. No amount of name-dropping will work with some of us,” Mliswa posted on X.
However, ZRU has assured its stakeholders that they remain steadfast in upholding the integrity, values, and governance structures that form the foundation of rugby in Zimbabwe. They said the decision they took is to ensure that the organisation’s brand image remains intact, especially, at a period when the Sables are on the quest to qualify for the World Cup.
“In light of recent grossly unfounded allegations concerning financial mismanagement, made by a suspended board member, Mr Temba Mliswa, the Union wishes to clarify the facts and reassure the rugby community, stakeholders and the public that ZRU continues to operate within the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.
“We recognise the importance of open communication and accountability, and we are dedicated to ensuring that all members adhere to the established rules and regulations. While we acknowledge the right of individuals to express their views, we strongly condemn any actions that seek to undermine the integrity of the Union and the game of rugby in Zimbabwe.
“The ZRU has a responsibility to protect the sport and its stakeholders from actions that could damage its reputation or disrupt its operations.
“The decision taken by the Union is to protect the integrity of its brand, particularly in an important year such as this when there must be minimal disruption to the Sables preparations for World Cup qualifiers later in the year as well as to protect the very important sponsorship and other stakeholder interests at stake,” read the statement.
ZRU said their focus remains the development of players and the success of teams. They further assured players, coaches and stakeholders that they will continue to relentlessly work towards the growth and future success of Zimbabwean rugby.
