The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority in partnership with the Harare City Council on Tuesday launched a clean-up campaign dubbed the “Harare International Carnival Clean-up”.
The campaign, which is a first of more to come, is an effort by stakeholders to establish and maintain cleanliness in the city during the carnival. “It is the intention of ZTA and its partners to ensure that the clean-up campaign is sustained before, during and after the carnival. The ultimate objective is to have Harare regain its Sunshine City status,” said ZTA in a statement prior to the event.
The occasion was graced by Harare Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni, ZTA acting Chief Executive Givemore Chidzidzi and ZTA board member Marah Hativagoni, among other stakeholders. The officials cleaned up parts of Africa Unity Square before encouraging locals to keep the city clean at all times. The Harare International Carnival will take place on May 16 to 25.
Spirits are high in the ZTA camp as they are promising a bigger and better second edition.
A number of activities have been lined up and these include a “Bira Night” to be held in Domboshava, an Africa Day discussion at the Book Café, a “Samba Night” at the Airport Lounge, Carnival Fashion Show, “Carnival Jazz Night”, and “Exotic Night” at Red Fox among others.
More than 20 African, Asian, European and south American countries have confirmed participation in the grand fiesta that is running under the theme “Celebrating Diversity”.This is an increase from the 14 countries that participated in the inaugural carnival last year.
A carnival queen to be crowned on May 16 will lead the procession at the grand Carnival Street Party.
