ONE of Mutare’s best restaurants, Credos, has been shut down by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) for operating without grading, registration and adherence to state regulations.
ZTA brandished posters revealed that the fan favourite facility was shut down on grounds relating to Section 36 of the Zimbabwe Tourism Act [Chapter 14:20] of 1996, which mandates that all designated tourist facilities must be registered and graded by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA). Credos is one of the four facilities on which ZTA cracked the whip in Manicaland.
The development most likely took place on February 3.
Credos’ restaurant’s closure is in line with statutes which state that non-compliant facilities face closure, especially when operational without the registration or grading of the ZTA chief executive’s issued certificate of compliance.
The ZTA’s functions include promoting Zimbabwe as a destination for tourists and promoting the tourist industry in overseas, regional and domestic markets. In addition, it aims to develop marketing skills and initiatives within the tourist industry and promote high standards in the tourist industry through the establishment of standards, training and human resource development.
Restaurants such as Credos are expected to register and be graded as designated tourist facilities by the ZTA. It is also the ZTA’s mandate to promote the development of tourist facilities.
As of early 2026, the ZTA is conducting inspections to enforce these standards, and this development shows that the authority has hit the ground running.
The event serves as a warning to facilities that operating without registration or failing to update registration, if required, is an offence.
