Johannesburg — President Jacob Zuma has returned from the Republic of Congo, the presidency said yesterday.
Zuma attended the 25th anniversary celebration of the Brazzaville peace accord which coincided with the release of former president Nelson Mandela from prison on February 11, 1990, said spokesperson Mac Maharaj.
“During the event, the African heads of state and representatives paid homage to Madiba and his contribution to the liberation struggle in South Africa and the Southern African region.”
Mandela died at his home in Houghton in December at the age of 95.
The anniversary celebration commemorated the conclusion of the Brazzaville negotiations which ended the Angolan civil war on December 22, 1988.
Zuma was invited to attend the celebration by Congo President Dennis Sassou-N’guesso.
Maharaj said South Africa continued to enjoy cordial bilateral relations with the Republic of Congo. — Sapa
