Johannesburg — President Jacob Zuma wished Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu a speedy recovery after he was admitted to hospital earlier this week.
“We send our good wishes and support to our world renowned Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Tutu,” Zuma said in a statement.
“We wish the medical team that is attending to him all the necessary wisdom and call on all South Africans to keep Archbishop Tutu and his family in their thoughts and prayers.”
Tutu was hospitalised on Tuesday for a persistent infection, his foundation said in a statement.
Tutu was reportedly being treated in a Cape Town hospital.
The foundation did not give details about his illness but Tutu’s daughter, Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu said they hoped he will “be able to return home in a day or two”.
Mpho Tutu officiated at her parent’s renewal of their wedding vows less than two weeks ago as they celebrated 60 years of marriage.
The 83-year-old Tutu has also battled prostate cancer for more than a decade.
In December last year, he cancelled an appearance at the launch of his legacy foundation project and handover of a children’s playroom at Tygerberg Hospital.
At the time, it was reported that Tutu had to undergo a course of new medication to manage the disease. — Sapa
