THE number one cause of absenteeism of the girl child in school is due to lack of sanitary towels.

A Unesco report estimates that one in ten girls in sub-Saharan Africa misses school during their menstrual cycle. By some estimates, this equals as much as twenty percent of a given school year.

Many girls drop out of school altogether once they begin menstruating. Should young women miss 20 percent of school days in a given year due to a lack of facilities or a lack of information or a lack of sanitary products?

Well, Mirror Image foundation has organised a fundraiser to help the girl child in need of sanitary towels. The foundation which has 120 beneficiaries from four different schools is hosting a Zumba family fun day to raise funds to help a girl child stay in school at the waterfront on the 12th of August in Bulawayo. Zimbabwe’s own Zumba king Zorro will be gracing the event with his vibrant Zumba exercise.

Zorro is one of the most sought after Zumba coaches in the country and has promised to dazzle the crowd with his energy filled dances that the whole family will enjoy. Zip liner, trampoline and canoeing are some of the activities that will be available on the day.

Waterfront is the perfect venue for a family outing as you can set up a picnic or braai stand and enjoy the activities lined up for the day. Kim Nyathi, one of the organisers said the fundraiser is going to go a long way in promoting the education of the girl child.

“Young girls are the future leaders and it’s of paramount importance to invest in their education. It is everyone’s social responsibility to ensure that we invest in the school going girl and buying sanitary towels is one such way”, said Nyathi.

Tickets are readily available at Mzansi 4 Sure boutique in Bulawayo.
