A 42-year-old ZUPCO driver was jailed by the Hwange Magistrate’s Court after being convicted of culpable homicide.

The conviction follows a tragic incident on the evening of 17 September 2025, when Thandani Mahlangu struck a cyclist, resulting in the cyclist’s immediate death. The magistrate imposed a USD400 fine or six months’ imprisonment in default of payment.

At around 7:00pm, Mahlangu was driving a ZUPCO Dragon bus along the Cross Dete–Binga Road when he struck the cyclist at the 85km peg near Simwemwe village. He was speeding and failed to maintain a proper lookout while driving.

In addition, Mahlangu has been prohibited from driving for 24 months and his Class One driving licence has been cancelled.

The National Peace and Security Agency of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has expressed concern over the increasing number of fatalities caused by negligent driving on the country’s roads and urged all road users to exercise extreme caution to prevent further tragedies.
