THE Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (Zusa) has sent a team of 32 athletes for the World Universities Games to be held in Gwangju, South Korea from July 3 to 14.

The team comprises eight technical staff and 24 athletes.

The Games are an international multi-sport event organised for university athletes by the International Universities Sports Federation (Fisu).

The athletes’ village in Gwangjua was officially opened last Friday by Fisu secretary-general, Eric Saintrond.

Saintrond said Gwangju would turn into the world capital of university youths.

Zimbabwe sent its biggest team ever to the university games to participate in four different disciplines, athletics, women’s volleyball, golf and tennis.

The majority of the athletes are from the University of Zimbabwe, with Midlands State University (MSU), Great Zimbabwe University, Africa University and the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) providing the others.

Nust communication and marketing officer, Lindiwe Nyoni said her institution provided three students, Tafadzwa Chitemamwaise, Tesley Mufunda and Nozinhle Khumalo.

Chitemamwaise and Mufunda are in the tennis team while Khumalo was chosen for volleyball.

“We are proud that three of our students made it into the Zusa teams. The students won’t be representing Nust but the whole nation, which is a big achievement. We wish all the athletes the best,” said Nyoni.
