‘Zvandiri’ launches song

The adolescent outfit which comprises children born with HIV, put across a bold message that is set to change the minds of many. Pity is not what they were asking for but merely a chance to live their lives without being discriminated.

“We are not waiting for the storm to end but in the midst of it, we have learnt how to dance    . . .” they said in a verse from the song.
Artistes BaShupi, Ammara Brown, Blackbird, Mokoomba, Edith Weutonga, and Arundel School Cultural Choir were among the team that made up the supporting “Super Band” in the children’s song that was produced by Rina Mushonga.

“It took us three weeks to work on the song and as children living with HIV, we incorporated the messages that
we wanted the give to the world before we came up with the powerful song,” said one of the members, Loyce Maturu.

The adolescent spoke openly about her life, during the sidelines of the show and highlighted that they were inspired by Auxillia Chimusoro’s legacy to be old enough to break the silence on the Aids pandemic.

“All we want in our lives is for people to accept us the way we are hence the name ‘Zvandiri’. We might have HIV but we are normal kids who are capable of doing anything normal people can do,” she said.

Maturu, who is also an orphan, reaveled she was not entirely bothered by the stigma that she sometimes faces in her life because it reflects ignorance which they are trying to put an end to through educating the people

The director of Africaid, Nicola Lewis, applauded the children and reiterated that their song will go a long way in raising awareness and drive stakeholders into taking action.
“These adolescents were brave enough to speak out in an effort to improve people’s understanding of HIV.

“As an organisation, we were given the Auxillia Chimusoro Allumni Award through the US Embassy and what better way to follow her footsteps than to learn to be brave.
“We will continue to support them as we believe in giving young people living with HIV opportunities to develop,” she said. – CL Reporter.
