Rising visual artist Asa King Zvihari has been selected to be part of the “African Charity Fundraiser” exhibition set to open at Oriental Tower in Shanghai, China on June 1.
Spearheaded by Shanghai Xizhixing Charity Foundation, the exhibition will feature various artists, with the aim of raising funds that will be used to drill boreholes in Harare.
This comes at a time the Harare City Council has perennially failed to provide running water in different suburbs, resulting in recurrent surges of cholera and typhoid.
Zvihari said he was honoured to be selected for this acclaimed international exhibition.
“It’s an incredible honour to have my work selected for this international art exhibition in Shanghai,” he said.
“I’ve always believed that art has no boundaries, and this event is a wonderful opportunity for artists from around the world to come together and showcase our unique perspectives and styles.
“I’ve poured my heart and soul into my art, and to have it recognised on such a global stage is both humbling and inspiring.
“I can’t wait to see how the audience in Shanghai responds to my work. I am looking forward to experiencing the diverse and creative talent that will be on display from other artists at the exhibition.”
Zvihari’s said his paintings were inspired by his concern for the living and educational conditions of African children, as well as the complex and evolving relationship between China and Africa.
“Through my art, I aim to raise awareness about the challenges faced by African communities and to encourage people to consider how the international community, including China, can support and collaborate with African countries to improve their development,” he said.
“My work depicts the resilience and determination of African children, while also highlighting the opportunities that arise from international partnerships.
“I believe that art has the power to not only reflect reality but also to inspire positive change.
“I hope that my paintings will spark meaningful conversations and actions that contribute to a better future for all.”
Zvihari’s art highlights the potential of international partnerships, such as that between China and Zimbabwe, to bring about positive change in the lives of children.
The cooperation between the two nations has in the past led to improvements in educational facilities, healthcare services and economic opportunities, which will directly benefit the future generations of Zimbabwe.
“My artworks capture the hope and optimism that arise from such partnerships,” said Zvihari.
Also as part of the exhibition, there would be a series of paintings titled “Love of Life”.
Zvihari said he sought to capture the deep connection and mutual respect that exists between people and wildlife in Africa.
“Each painting explores the interdependence and harmony that can be achieved when humans coexist peacefully with nature,” he said.
“Through vibrant colours and dynamic compositions, I sought to convey the incredible biodiversity of the African continent and the importance of preserving its unique ecosystems.
“Each piece is a celebration of the beauty, strength and resilience of both the human and animal inhabitants of Africa.”
Zvihari’s work invites viewers to reflect on their own relationship with nature and consider how they can all play a role in protecting the earth’s precious resources and wildlife for future generations to enjoy.
This is not Zvihari’s first dance with the Chinese. Last year he finished in third place in “My Dream”, a visual art competition for young African artists, designed to promote people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between China and Africa.
His painting entered in that competition as part of a 10-piece art collection that is on display in the Chinese Tiangong spaceship.
“This experience was truly life-changing, as it allowed me to share my work with a wider audience and to connect with other talented artists from across the continent,” said Zvihari.
“Winning the third prize was a humbling recognition of my dedication to my craft and a validation of the themes and ideas I strive to convey through my art.
“It has inspired me to continue pushing the boundaries of my creativity and to use my talent as a force for positive change in the world.
“I am incredibly proud to have had my painting become part of history as one of the first artworks to be sent to the Moon, aboard a Chinese spaceship.”
