Zvishavane Town Council has embarked on roads rehabilitation programme after receiving $265 000 from the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration. In an interview, Zvishavane town secretary Mr Tinoda Mukutu said they had tarred 10 kilometres in the central business district.
“We managed to resurface 10 kilometres with the $265 000 that we received from Zinara last year and an additional $140 000 from our local coffers. The area in the CBD includes roads such as Sleta, Prince, Pote and Row Avenue,” he said.
He said road rehabilitation was a major priority for the town.
Most roads in high-density suburbs like Maglass and Mandava are now in a dilapidated state and need resealing.
“We were supposed to receive $414 000 from Zinara but we only received $265 000. Some of our low -density suburbs are on virgin land so there is need to put solid roads.
Meanwhile, the town council has embarked on an expansion project as it seeks municipal status.
The expansion programme will see the central business district relocating eastwards to an area near TM Supermarket along the Masvingo-Zvishavane road.
“Zvishavane is rapidly growing in terms of infrastructure, housing and economic activity so we are currently working on expanding the CBD.
In line with modernisation we are going to be having a state of the art shopping mall in the new CBD. We are in the tendering process,” said Mr Mukutu.
Zvishavane is growing fast owing to mining activities in the town.
It has platinum, asbestos and gold.
