Zvishavane District Hospital yesterday resumed normal operations, admitting new patients following the completion of a disinfection exercise after being closed early this week after 28 people mostly nurses, tested positive for Covid-19.

The hospital on Monday, suspended normal services to embark on a massive disinfection exercise after 25 healthcare workers and three officials from the district registrar’s office attached to the hospital tested positive for Covid-19.

Zvishavane District Hospital is the major referral hospital for Zvishavane, Mberengwa districts and parts of Mbalabala.

Yesterday, Zvishavane district development coordinator who is also the district Covid-19 taskforce chairperson, Mr Darlington Chokera said the hospital was now accepting new admissions, adding that normal services had resumed following the disinfection exercise.

“Normal services have resumed after we embarked on a massive disinfection exercise of the hospital following the detection of Covid-19 infections among nurses and other frontline staff at the hospital.

“The disinfection exercise will continue, but we are saying the hospital is open to the public because this is where patients seek medical assistance and other health care services,” he said. Mr Chokera said the healthcare workers who tested positive were now in isolation, adding that the district’s Covid-19 taskforce was conducting a rigorous Covid-19 prevention exercises at the hospital to curb further infections.

Meanwhile, Mr Chokera has allayed fears that the town had become a hotspot for Covid-19.

He said the authorities were working hard to try and avoid further infections.

“We have rolled out a massive programme to try and contain the spread of the disease in the town including tracing contacts of those who have tested positive. We are also conducting campaigns, urging people to always wear masks in public places and observing social distancing,” he said.
