Zvishavane residents complain over lack of water

residents here have petitioned the town council over its failure to provide them with water for months. The affected residents, mostly from Isaiah Park, whose petition detailed their water plight, argued that the council had neglected them for too long. Mr Mathias Murezva, a resident, said they were shocked that the council had been awarded the best local authority award at the Midlands Megafest Awards.

“They are failing to get us water. Why should they be awarded when they are failing in this regard? We are now approaching our second month and we are experiencing such water challenges,” he said. Mr Murezva said water was a basic right.

“We expect the council to make sure that they provide us with the water We are sick and tired of this situation and this will lead to people getting all sorts of diseases because they may end up resorting to unsafe water sources,” he said. The Zvishavane Residents and Ratepayers Association confirmed the water challenges, which have also affected residents in Highlands suburb.

“We can confirm the water challenges in Highlands and Isaiah Park, but we have been told that some areas get water during the night,” said the association in a statement.

“The first time when we engaged the authorities they said it was because of the power cuts, but then it seems it’s persisting.” Town Secretary Mr Tinoda Mukutu confirmed receiving the petition from the residents, adding that he had tasked the town engineer responsible for water to look into the issue.
“We thought it could be something to do with the valves. So that was looked at and we hope to have that rectified,” he said.
