From Munyaradzi Doma in Zvishavane
Residents in Zvishavane have accused the local authority of failing to provide clean water and exposing them to water-borne diseases.
They said although the Zvishavane Town Council had committed to have the situation rectified, the residents believe the authorities are not giving the issue the attention it deserves.
Residents who spoke to our Harare Bureau said though they get regular water supplies, the quality was not good enough.
“We appreciate that at least we are getting water but the quality is not good enough, it defeats the whole purpose because it is always dirty,” Tanya Zhou said.
She said the authorities should ensure the water is clean so that residents are not exposed to diseases.
Another resident said: “Once you pour this water into a container, some brown like substance collects at the bottom.”
“The issue about water quality is forcing some residents to buy drinking water as they fear falling sick. People will definitely get sick because of this water so something must be done urgently to correct the situation,” said Takesure Moyo.
The council has also admitted that the water quality is poor during rainy season and has made a commitment to address the problem. “We are providing water to most of the town but we have been having some challenges in some few areas. During the rainy season, the quality of our water leaves a lot to be desired.
“The water is brown. Water is colourless and it has to be just that. However, the issue of ‘brown water’ is being addressed at our water works,” council says in its minutes released recently.
The council said it was re-sanding, sand-washing and placing and replacing nozzles. “We hope this will improve the quality of our water during the coming rainy season,” the council said.
