FORMER Zimbabwe Rugby Union chief executive Titus Zvomuya believes talented girls school at Vainona and Girls High should be used as model teams. The two schools have over the years been taking part at the Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival in the girls section and were part of the teams that featured on the opening day.
This is the third year that the Prince Edward festival has included girls teams and, during Zvomuya’s days, as the ZRU chief, the festival was exclusively for the boys. “I think given the talent that schools like Vainona are showing in the game, they should be used as model rugby schools for girls,” said Zvomuya.
“It is because of such projects or schools that we can be able to say the game is developing and growing setting a good base or foundation for the future national teams.
“Of course, during my days this festival was just for boys and I would like to commend both Prince Edward School and Dairibord for having and supporting such initiatives.
“Given the way Vainona played today we can only say they the future of women’s rugby in Zimbabwe is bright and we need to tap into it.”
But, according to Zvomuya, the festival has not only grown to cater for the girl child but class is also being shown in administration and organisation
“There is a marked improvement in terms of skill, organisation, administration and officiating.
“I would love to believe that this is because of the administrative and developmental courses that are being hosted by several stakeholders, who include the likes of ZOC (Zimbabwe Olympic Committee), which have contributed immensely to the development of not only rugby but sport as a whole in Zimbabwe.
