BRENDON de Jonge managed his first top ten finish of the season when he finished tied on sixth place at the Quail Hollow Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, on the US PGA Tour at the weekend. The Zimbabwean ace also equaled the course record, and the best round of his professional career, when he scored a brilliant 10-under-par 62 during the second round of the tournament. De Jonge started the event badly after shooting 80 on the opening round on Thursday but turned his form around in dramatic fashion, 24 hours later, as he sank eight birdies and an eagle to storm back into contention. He tied the Quail Hollow course record held by former world number one, Rory McIlroy, whose final-round 62 saw him to his first career PGA victory in this tournament in 2010.

“I wish I could go into every round with that kind of a mindset, but it’s easier said than done,” De Jonge, who made eight birdies and an eagle, said in an interview with the pgatour.com. As horrible as yesterday (Thursday) was, today was as nice. So this game gives you something and takes something away.”

The 33-year-old Harare-born golfer followed up Friday’s sensational performance with a four-under 68 in the third round where he played along top United States golfer Phil Mickelson.

De Jonge posted a three-under-par 69 to wrap up a nine-under total for a sixth place tie with Kevin Kisner.
