THE Zimbabwe wrestling Federation (ZWF) is set to introduce wrestling as a sport that will be competed in schools countrywide.
Zimbabwe Wrestling Federation Marketing Manager, Blessing Mashingaidze said they are in a process of setting up provincial structures and they are working towards implementing the project fully.
“I have made a survey in gyms around our countries’ cities and I have discovered that people love the sport and so far in Gweru plans are underway to launch the sport.”
“We also need to find professional script writers so that our plays are entertaining,” said Mashingaidze.
At one time, World Wrestling Federation (WWF) players such as the Giant Haystacks and Bushwhackers came to Harare for a match that saw supporters packing Rufaro stadium to the brim.
Wrestling was the only sport other than soccer that drew major crowds at Rufaro Stadium.
Even local athletes would compete at the world stage.
Zimbabwe produced great wrestlers in Max “Moon dog” Kutsanzira, Oliver Tengende, Spider Bamu and Lucas Sabawo among many others.
Last year, ZWF took part in a seminar aimed at the promotion of traditional games that were held in Turkey, and the ZWF agreed to implement the recommendations for use in Zimbabwe in order to revamp wrestling in the country.
