A commuter omnibus driver died while 19 passengers were injured and rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital following a three-vehicle pile-up along Bulawayo’s Khami Road on Friday. The accident occurred near Khami Cafe at around 7PM. A witness said two kombis collided head-on and a three-tonne truck rammed into them.
Bulawayo chief fire officer Richard Peterson said one of the kombi drivers died on the spot. “The kombi driver who was heading towards Pumula died on the spot. The other kombi driver escaped with serious injuries while the three-tonne truck driver was completely unhurt,” said Peterson.
He said 19 passengers were rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment. The passengers’ conditions could not be ascertained yesterday. Peterson said the accident was witnessed by one of their ambulance technicians.
He urged motorists to be careful. “We’re approaching a long holiday, I’m appealing to drivers to exercise caution on the roads. We know some of our roads aren’t in good shape but it’s the driver’s responsibility to preserve lives of passengers as well as pedestrians,” said Peterson.
He said motorists must avoid drinking and driving as this contributes to accidents.
