adminABOUT 100 athletes from different schools, colleges and uniformed forces are expected to take part in the inaugural 10km ‘running for peace’ race set for Mutare on Sunday.
The “running for peace” race is part of the country’s World Peace Day commemorations which are being hosted by Manicaland this year.
Sports and Recreation Commission Manicaland co-ordinator Shupikai Berejena confirmed the event. “We are expecting to have about 100 athletes for the ‘running for peace’ 10km competition. This has been organised as part of the World Peace Day annual commemorations that Mutare will host this year.
“We will have participants from schools, colleges and uniformed forces as well as members of the public willing to take part in the competition.
“Although it has not yet been finalised, we are expecting to have prizes for winners. We hope Mutare will be able to host not only a successful race, but the World Peace Day event itself,” said Berejena.
The competition is expected to see participants racing from Mutare Showgrounds and make their way through Chikanga high-density suburb before returning to the showground.
The International Day of Peace, sometimes unofficially known as World Peace Day, is observed annually on 21 September.
It is dedicated to world peace and specifically the absence of war, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access.
The day was first celebrated in 1982, and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and peoples.
