100 dead in Darfur tribal clashes

darfurKHARTOUM — At least 100 people were killed in fresh clashes between two Arab tribes in Sudan’s Darfur region, a local source said yesterday.
Armed clashes between Rizaigat tribe and rival Ma’liya tribe took place in Adila area in South Darfur state on Saturday, a leading figure of Rizaigat told Xinhua.

“We killed 70 of them, 30 of our men were missing and 70 others were injured,” the source said.
The tension remains high in the region, the source added, warning the fight might resume at any moment.

Tribal conflicts are a major problem confronting the Sudanese government, which have so far failed to solve it despite the inter- tribe reconciliation conferences it had held.

The Darfur community consists of different African and Arab tribes, among whom unrest frequently erupts due to disputes on pastures and water resources. — Xinhua.
