A Bulawayo woman who was paid more than $1,000 by another woman after promising to find a job for her son, has been sentenced to 15 months imprisonment.

Virginia Dube, 51, of Tshabalala suburb who was paid $1,419 by Rosemary Moyo of Mahatshula suburb after promising to find a job for her son, was convicted on her own plea by magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure.

Dube’s sentence was wholly suspended on condition she restitutes Moyo and also performs 315 hours of community service.

Mashavakure said in passing the sentence she had taken into consideration that Dube was a first offender who had shown remorse.

Prosecuting, Taurai Hondoyemoto, said in June, 2015, Dube and Moyo met at the complainant’s workplace.

Dube then misrepresented herself as an employee of a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

“The accused told the complainant that she was employed by an NGO and could facilitate the employment of her son,” he said.

Dube was then paid $1,419 on different occasions to facilitate the employment of Moyo’s son.

When Moyo realised that she had been defrauded, she reported the matter to the police leading to Dube’s arrest.
