11th Auxillia Chimusoro awards honour excellency

since the programme started two years ago.

Health and Child Welfare Minister Henry Madzorera said male circumcision had been embraced by many.
He made the remarks while addressing hundreds of people at the 11th Auxillia Chimusoro Awards in Harare yesterday.
“This means men more than ever have an important role to play in the journey towards zero infections by getting circumcised,” Minister Madzorera said.

“As a ministry, we urge all adult men and adolescent boys to take the key step now to get circumcised for the sake of their partners, children and the nation at large.”
Minister Madzorera said of an estimated 15 000 children infected with HIV, the majority got the virus through mother to child transmission.
Four people and two organisations were honoured for excelling in the fight against HIV and Aids in the country.

Technical experts Agnes Makomva and Karin Hatzold won the leadership award and the special recognition award respectively.
Radio journalist Hamu Madzedze and activist Tichaona Nhizwa were joint winners in the communication category.

Delta Corporation and Northern Tobacco received awards for HIV programmes targeted at employees and their families.
United States ambassador Charles Ray pledged to contribute US$60 million to the national HIV and Aids response.

The awards are named after Auxillia Chimusoro who was the first Zimbabwean to disclose her HIV status in 1989.
She died from Aids-related illness in 1998.
