TWELVE volleyball clubs from Matabeleland South, Midlands, Matabeleland North, Masvingo and Bulawayo Provinces will compete at an invitational tournament set for ZRP Gwanda grounds today.

Eight out of the 12 clubs, Bulawayo’s Spartans, Air Force of Gweru, ZRP Gwanda, Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic, Masvingo Polytechnic, Great Zimbabwe University and Lupane state university will field men and women’s teams.

Highlanders, Gweru’s CATS, Filabusi Wild Ones and PPC Collen Bawn will only have men’s clubs.

Irvine Masimba, Matabeleland South Volleyball Association’s vice-president, said all is set for the tournament.

“As a province we’re happy that our teams will get an opportunity to test their level of preparedness by taking on stronger teams from other areas. This tournament will not only benefit our teams but even those that are coming from other areas.

“Hopefully after this tournament we will be able to run a competitive league in Matabeleland South and become a force to reckon with in Zimbabwean volleyball,” said Masimba.

He said their aim is to have volleyball teams from all Matabeleland South’s eight districts — Gwanda North, Gwanda South, Beitbridge, Matobo, Bulilima, Mangwe, Umzingwane and Insiza competing in their league.
