120 children undergo free hernia surgery

necessitated by the fact that more and more children are being born with hernia yet there are few specialists to conduct the corrective surgery,” Mr Vera said.
He said although hernia was a short procedure to repair protrusion of an organ through the wall of the cavity that normally contains it, peadiatric surgeons usually do it.
In Zimbabwe there are only two peadiatric surgeons at the moment yet an estimated one in every 100 babies born have hernia.
This figure translates to 12 children every month at Harare Hospital only. About 1 200 babies are born at Harare Central Hospital every month.
Mr Vera said some children fail to be operated on time because the doctors would be attending to other equally important surgical cases, hence the idea of coming up with hernia week.
“Initially, hernia week was an annual event on our calendar but because of the rise in the number of babies with hernia, sometimes we have the operations thrice a year,” Dr Vera said.
The current operations are the second to be carried out this year.
