MASQUERADING as a member of the Zimbabwe National Army earned a Mutare man a $120 fine, failure to pay will result in him spending 60 days in prison.
Norest Murapa (23) of House Number 3606, Chikanga 2, appeared before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura last Wednesday and was convicted on his plea of guilty.
He was facing charges of unlawful possession or wearing camouflage uniform as defined in Section 32 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23. Public prosecutor, Mr Donald Mudadirwa, told the court that: “On August 18 at Sport Field, Chikanga 2, Murapa unlawfully possessed and wore a camouflage uniform.
“Murapa was seen by Enias Masakwa (43) a soldier residing at 3 Brigade. “Musakwa was playing basketball at Sports Field, Chikanga when he saw Murapa wearing a camouflage uniform, surprisingly with sports shoes with no head gear. “Masakwa suspected that Murapa was not a soldier and he proceeded to call him for questioning.
“Murapa told Musakwa that he was not a member of the ZNA. He was advised that it was unlawful to wear an army uniform while he was not a soldier. He was taken to 3 Brigade Headquarters and was handed over to the Military Police, leading to his arrest,” he said.
