IT was all smiles and laughter at Mutare Farm Prison this afternoon as inmates who benefited from the Presidential Amnesty and Pardon programme awaited their release.
According to officials from the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS), the inmates will be released tomorrow morning.
A total of 123 inmates at Mutare Farm Prison are set to walk free under the Presidential Amnesty and Pardon programme, while a further 23 had their sentences reduced.
Speaking in Harare this afternoon, Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Hon Ziyambi Ziyambi said the 2026 General Amnesty is aimed at rehabilitating and reintegrating offenders into society.
He said prisoners serving more than 48 months also received a 25 percent remission of their sentences.
The amnesty, however, excludes inmates convicted of serious offences such as murder, treason, rape and other sexual offences, robbery and armed robbery, human trafficking, unlawful possession of firearms, as well as violations of specific legislation including the Electricity Act and the Copper Act.
Authorities said the programme is also intended to decongest correctional facilities and promote a healthier environment for remaining inmates.
