A 14-year-old girl from Emakhandeni suburb in Bulawayo reportedly committed suicide by hanging, following a confrontation with her older sister.

The incident occurred after the older sister reprimanded the teenager over the manner in which she was playing with their younger sibling.

Deputy Bulawayo police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu, confirmed the incident, in which Kwandumusa Faith Msimanga, who was a Form 1 student, hanged herself from a roof truss.

“On 3 September at around 9 AM, Kwandumusa Faith Msimanga was playing with her little brother Mqhele. The two were playing, hitting each other with rolled calendars, and Mqhele Msimanga eventually started to cry,” she said.

“Their older sister reprimanded them for how they were playing. This did not sit well with Kwandumusa, who then went to the bedroom and locked herself inside,” said Asst Insp Ndlovu.
She said that at around 10 AM, her older sister knocked on the door, asking her to come out.

“After a few minutes, Kwandumusa called her sister to go to the window to see what she was doing, but she refused, thinking that she was just being playful.

“Eventually, the older sister went to the window and saw Kwandumusa hanging from the roof truss. She then phoned their neighbours for assistance,” said Asst Insp Ndlovu.

She said the neighbours forced the door open and cut the rope, before trying to resuscitate her.
“Her father, on arrival, rushed her to Emakhandeni Clinic, where she was pronounced deceased on arrival. The body was physically inspected and bruises were noted around the neck.

“Police also proceeded to the house, where a thin white and blue rope used by the deceased to hang herself was discovered tied to the roof truss.

“No suicide note was found. The deceased’s body was conveyed to Mpilo Hospital for post-mortem,” Asst Insp Ndlovu said.
