$15 bribe lands cop in the dock

A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer stationed at Morris Depot in Harare appeared in court last week for allegedly soliciting and receiving a bribe from a Mutasa man, who wanted a police clearance certificate. Nicholas Dzimiri (33) appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Tildah Mazhandu facing charges of criminal abuse of office as a police officer.

He was remanded to March 27 on $50 bail.
Prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on February 23, the man wanted a police clearance certificate as he wanted to apply for a South African scholarship.

He went to Mutasa Police Station where he paid $10 for the certificate to be processed.
After his fingerprints were taken, he was subsequently referred to the CID at Morris Depot for processing.
It is further alleged that on February 24, the man went to Morris Depot with his fingerprint form and proof of payment and was accosted by officers who were manning the guard room.

The officers referred him to Dzimiri, who was also in the guard room.
The man emphasised to Dzimiri that he needed the certificate before February 26.
He was, however, advised that he needed to pay an extra $20 in order to get the document by that date.
