A 26-year-old Sunning Hill man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl in Bulawayo.

The incident occurred on August 16 at about 4.30pm when the juvenile was sent by her 19-year-old sister to buy Jumbo snacks.

On her way home, the girl was approached by Mduduzi Sibanda, who convinced her to pass by his residence.

Police said Sibanda grabbed the girl upon arrival, pushed her into his room, removed her track pants and ordered her not to scream before raping her once.

After the assault, Sibanda escorted the girl back home and warned her not to tell anyone.

However, upon reaching home, the girl told her sister what had happened, leading to a police report and Sibanda’s arrest.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the case and welcomed the sentence.

“We commend our courts for their swift and decisive handling of such cases. Justice delivered sends a strong message to criminals that crimes of this nature will not be tolerated,” said Insp Msebele.

She urged members of the community to work together to protect children from abuse.

The accused appeared in court on August 21 and was convicted and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.

Insp Msebele encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report cases of child abuse to the police.
