National Traffic Police spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome said operators were endangering the lives of passengers.
“We encounter many road accidents as we approach the festive season and we are not hesitant to continue impounding these vehicles,” he said.
“The commuter omnibuses impou-nded are not roadworthy and commuter omnibus operators continue to endanger people’s lives.
“Commuter omnibuses that are being impounded are those that have shattered windscreens, overloaded and those with drivers without requisite documents.”
Insp Chigome said shattered windscreens impaired vision, especially during the rain season.
“We are going to continue with this process as it is not an operation, but a legal measure to protect the lives of our citizens,” he said.
Insp Chigome said officers should not take bribes from commuter bus crews.
“Our endeavour is to save lives for now and the coming years and zero tolerance to corruption is the way forward,” he said.
“Passengers should avoid boarding vehicles that are clearly not road worthy.”
Insp Chigome said the smashing of commuter omnibus’ windscreens by the police was meant to encourage operators to co-operate.
