16 000 motorists on police wanted list

National Traffic police spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome yesterday said the operation was code named: “Wanga Uripi/Ubungaphi/Where have you been?”
“We now have a total of 16 036 motorists on our wanted list and an operation targeting such people is on-going,” he said.
Insp Chigome said the wanted motorists were arrested for violating the traffic regulations and released after being issued with Form 265 tickets to pay fines later. The tickets allow those arrested to pay admission of guilt fines within two weeks before they appear in court depending on the gravity of the offence.
“All those people who know that they were once arrested by the police and issued with tickets to pay fines or to appear in court, should report to any nearest traffic police station so that they clear their cases,” Insp Chigome said.
He said failure to comply would result in some of them being arrested and detained before they appear in court.
Insp Chigome urged members of the public to fully co-operate with the police during the operation.
Police would mount roadblocks in a particular area targeting those who gave their addresses for such an area.
“We believe some of them could have left the country while others are in the country and are evading police roadblocks and other check points thinking that their cases might die a natural death,” Insp Chigome.
The motorists face charges ranging from driving without due care, failure to report an accident, failure to stop after an accident, driving without current licence disk, possession of fake driver’s licence, negligent driving and culpable homicide.
