TRUST is earned, respect is given, and loyalty is demonstrated!
In an era where football players often prioritise lucrative offers over loyalty, 29-year-old Lawrence Masibera stands out as a shining exception.
Masibera has remained steadfast in his commitment to Manica Diamonds — a loyalty that was celebrated last Saturday during the team’s Castle Lager Premiership match against CAPS United.
The dreadlocked right-back achieved a remarkable milestone, clocking 160 matches for the Gem Boys — a feat unmatched by any other player at the club.
Masibera’s dedication is a testament to his character, having joined the club in 2018 when Manica Diamonds was formed, and participated in the Eastern Region Division One League.
He is now the longest-serving player in the Manica Diamonds camp.
Manica Diamonds paid tribute to Lawrence Masibera’s remarkable loyalty, presenting him with a token of appreciation for reaching 160 matches with the club.
Masibera received US$1 000, a personalised portrait, club replica jersey, and match ball in recognition of his dedication.
The former La Sakubva Juniors player has been an integral part of the Manica Diamonds line-up, featuring in nearly every competitive match.
Despite his impressive performance, Masibera has resisted enticing transfer offers, including one from former champions, FC Platinum during the Hendrik Pieter de Jongh’s tenure as head coach.
He said: “I have had a number of enticing offers before. I remember at one point, FC Platinum once approached me seeking my services at their club. Those were the days the club was still being coached by De Jongh. I could not accept the move, enticing as it was, because I still had a running contract with Manica Diamonds. The same happened with other offers that came my way. I just had to respect the contract I had with my current employers.”
For attaining 160 matches donning the gold and black Manica Diamonds stripes, Masibera said: “I am grateful for this recognition. I feel humbled and honoured to be recognised for my efforts in helping the club achieve its aspirations.”
Many among Manica Diamonds supporters and neutrals, who have watched the team’s matches recall Masibera’s long-range throw-ins and overlapping prowess, which often result in dangerous crosses for the opponents’ rear guard.
The long range throw-ins are something that he learnt from former soccer star of the year and ex-teammate, Evans ‘Morocco’ Chikwaikwai.
“I learnt the long range throw-ins from my former teammate, Evans Chikwaikwai. I admired it, and started learning to do the same with his guidance,” he said.
Club secretary general, Sugar Chagonda heaped praises on their right back for his unmatched loyalty.
“Lawrence Masibera has proven over the years that he is a dependable, loyal, and utility player. He joined the team during the formative stages, and we started our football journey together in Division One in 2018.
“His unwavering loyalty and consistent dependability are truly the backbone of Manica Diamonds FC. He seamlessly adapts to multiple roles on the field, demonstrating incredible versatility and a strong work ethic.
“His dedication, not only boosts team morale, but also ensures that we always have a reliable player when we need it most. His contributions often go unnoticed by the scoreboard, but they are deeply appreciated by everyone who values hard work and loyalty.
“To Lawrence, we say thank you for being such a dependable and versatile asset to our team. You are a role model to many youngsters. You have carved your name in the annals of history in stone. No one can ignore that,” said Chagonda.
