A TOTAL of 18 people died while 31 were injured in 107 road traffic accidents that were recorded during this year’s Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.
In a statement yesterday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said there was a decrease in road accidents this year compared to the same period last year.
He said during the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays last year, 155 accidents which claimed 10 lives, leaving 28 injured were recorded.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police informs the nation that a total number of fatal road traffic accidents for the 9th of August to the 11th of August 2021 registered an increase when compared to the same period last year, 9th August to 11th August 2020.
“This year we recorded a total number of 12 fatal road accidents which claimed the lives of 18, leaving 31 injured,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
He said speeding, misjudgement and overtaking errors were the major causes of the road accidents.
Asst Comm Nyathi urged motorists to exercise caution and observe the rules of the road to prevent accidents.
“We are appealing to drivers to be responsible and observe road rules and regulations,” he said.
Asst Comm Nyathi said members of the public should take note that under the current level four Covid-19 regulations, intercity movements are still banned, only commercial cargo and essential services vehicles are allowed.
Public gatherings remain banned save for funerals, which are limited to not more than 30 people.
The country remains under a national level four lockdown which was imposed by President Mnangagwa to stem rising Covid-19 deaths and infections.
Government has given churches the green light to resume physical services with only fully vaccinated congregants allowed to attend services while preparations for reopening of schools are underway. — @karub.
