The donation included mosquito nets, laundry detergents, clothes, toys, boxes of washing soap and 80 Bibles.
Handing over the donation to the Mayor Councillor Thaba Moyo in the Mayor’s parlour on Monday, the Latter Day Saints Charities directors and elders Mr and Mrs Ron and Sandra Bean said they were happy to be helping the needy and the vulnerable in society.
The couple heads the church’s branches in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.
“We believe it is our calling as a church to give back to society. It is very crucial that those who are poor and needy be catered for because they are part of our society,” said Elder Ron Bean.
Mrs Sandra Bean said they were going to continue giving to Bulawayo as they had already donated 12 boreholes to different wards in a bid to provide an alternative source of water.
“We also helped drill 12 boreholes in the city and we are going to continue coming up with ways to reach out to the needy and the vulnerable in the country,” she said.
In response, Clr Moyo said he was grateful of the donation. He said the church had shown kindness even in drilling the 12 boreholes.
“We are very grateful as the city of Bulawayo for the donation and the boreholes will not only be a source of water but money as well. Some of our residents use the water for their nutrition garden
projects where they grow and sell vegetables for a living,” said Clr Moyo.
The council’s senior public relations officer, Mrs Nesisa Mpofu, said she was happy that the cheer fund was gaining momentum.
“The fund has gained momentum and we are hopeful that more donations will be coming,” she said.
Mrs Mpofu said the last time they checked the bank account, the balance was US$12 500 and more donations were expected as there were many programmes under the fund-raising drive.
The target for the cheer fund was set at US$100 000.
The Christmas Cheer Fund is held annually during the festive season to assist the needy and vulnerable groups in the community.
