Some 2 507 cattle were stolen countrywide in the first four months of 2014, with 5 600 suspects arrested in connection with the crimes.
Police Anti-Stock Theft Unit national co-ordinator Senior Assistant Commissioner Bernard Dumbura on Tuesday, said 1 188 cattle theft cases were recorded between January and April this year.

“During the same period in 2013, 1 706 cases were recorded and 4 660 cattle were stolen,” Snr Asst Comm Dumbura said.

He said some of the suspects still had their cases pending before the courts while others had been finalised.

Stock theft is particularly rife in Midlands and Masvingo provinces.

Early this month, Deputy Commissioner-General (operations) Innocent Matibiri, said the force would soon introduce regulations barring clearance of unbranded cattle to curb stock-theft.

Police have managed to recover 901 stolen cattle.
