“Over the weekend, we had a Cook Off competition at Zim Gardens in Chisipite that saw two winning groups walking away with US$2 000 and US$1 000 prize money respectively,” she said.
A group from Entumbane in Bulawayo headed by Kepalestie Ncube shrugged off competition from nine other groups from around the country to come the best in the Fatti and Moni’s pasta cook off competition. They pocketed the US$2 000 and an extra US$500 that they will donate to a charity organisation of their choice.
Ncube credited their success to teamwork and perseverance.
“It is all the work of God and the team did a great job in working together to come up with the best pasta dish.
“Our money will go a long way in developing our stand as the Betheway Ministries in Bulawayo,” she said.
A representative of the group that came second, Vimbai Mukamba from Tynwald, was over the moon following their victory and the US$1 000 prize. They were also awarded with a variety of kitchen utensils.
“I am happy about our victory, and at this point, I cannot think of how to begin spending the prize money.
“Our secret ingredient was the coconut cream we added to our pasta dish to make it delightful,” she said.
The five judges, who were drawn from different restaurants in and out of Harare, highlighted that the competition had been stiff and choosing two winners from the 10 groups was indeed a mammoth task.
Their representative, Jean Mapulanga, who runs a restaurant in Bulawayo, applauded the relationship between Fattis and Moni’s with the local market.
“The response to the Cook Off was overwhelming and even though the participants were not professional chefs, there was nothing amateurish about their dishes.”
