‘$2 is enough for my two children’

Turning his back on his two children led a Mutare man being dragged to court by his brother-in-law. Allan Kabvunza dragged his brother-in-law, Silas Chirara who sells ropes at Sakubva Bus Terminus to court, accusing him of neglecting his two children and failing to take care of their educational needs. The two, however, ended up pointing fingers at each other after the court session, with the latter accusing the former of trying to squander his money in the name of the children’s fees.

Mrs Yeukai Chigodora presided over the matter.

Kabvunza told the court that Chirara dumped the children last year until they were thrown out of the house they were staying in by the landlord.

“The children’s mother stays in South Africa. They used to stay with their father here, but I took the two younger ones after they were thrown out of the house where their father had dumped them. I don’t have any problem with taking care of my sister’s children, but he should contribute towards their school fees and uniforms. I even took his own brother’s child to stay with her because she had nowhere to go. All this doesn’t matter to him. He gets a lot of money from selling ropes and we should help each other to take care of the children,” he said.

In response, Chirara said he never dumped his children. Instead he told the court that Kabvunza took two of his children in his absence.

“How can I dump my own children? This man snatched them when I was at work. However, I resorted to leave them staying with him as I secure a place to stay. Although he is staying with them, my mother is actually the one taking care of them. All these are plans to squander my money and I am not going to give him any money.

“The $2 that I am giving to the children for bread each and every day is enough. If I should pay more, it will go to my mother and not him,” said Chirara.

He added that his brother’s child should not be an issue to worry about because she was already above 18 years.

However, Mrs Chigodora told the two to come back for ruling as she wanted to c establish some facts from the children.
